I will admit the ACLU has done a lot of good work throughout the years of it being a organization. Fighting to bring abortion rights to women, fighting for trans health care, fighting racism and a whole lot more for the betterment of people. After all their history page states they believe in equality for all “The ACLU stands up for these rights even when the cause is UNPOPULAR, and sometimes when nobody else will. While not always in agreement with us on every issue, Americans have come to count on the ACLU for its unyielding dedication to principle.” and “ But the work of defending freedom never ends, and in our vibrant and passionate society, difficult struggles over individual rights and liberties aren’t likely to disappear anytime soon. The ACLU is committed to fight for freedom and the protection of constitutional rights for generations to come.”
I capitalized unpopular because they seem only to fight for what is popular and in the forefront of American media, especially lately. Here there is an article about fighting for girls and women when it comes to genital mutilation/cutting as society is rightly opposed to the cutting of them for religious reasons as it violates bodily autonomy and is a human rights violation, they in fact do a 180 when the issue of banning religious cutting of boys became a bill. This article is them stating it is the religion that has more rights than the person being cut. The ACLU sees it as a violation of religious freedom all of a sudden, why? Why did the gender of who was being cut change their view? Instead of standing up for boys and men, religion was seen as more important and needing of protection. Could this be because it has become so normalized many do not see it as wrong and the ACLU figured it would be a losing battle, or could it be that it wasn’t popular to go against the majority on this so why not side with them. This is one of the few times when the majority is wrong especially foregoing the human rights and bodily autonomy of boys being violated.
Give me your opinion and let me know why you think they are ignoring The equal protection clause like many of our politicians are.
